How to Makeover Your Morning Routine

Are your mornings a complete blur and a mad dash to get everyone out the door?  They can be a stressful part of the day and sometimes you can feel mentally drained before the day has really begun.  You’re definitely not on your own for feeling this way.

Our mornings can set the tone for the rest of our day, however,  the best thing is that we’re in control of how those first few hours affect us.  Implementing one or many nourishing practices in the morning can help kickstart your day in a positive way.

What are the benefits of a morning routine?

A set of practices that you can do in the morning and create space for yourself before your day has begun has so many benefits that will spread into different areas of your life:

  • Helps to give you focus and mental clarity
  • Feel less overwhelmed with the day ahead
  • Gives you a calming energy
  • Creates a sense of purpose to your day
  • Able to navigate what life throws at you better
  • Less reactive to things that happen to you and more in control of your emotions
  • Puts you in a positive mental space

No matter how much time you have in the morning, using it intentionally on things that will lift and support you as you go through the day is really going to benefit you.

I think that we could all do with a morning routine makeover to help us feel less like a tornado trying to escape out the door.  This can be achieved with some small tweaks to help you make your mornings work for you rather than against you.

I’m sharing simple ideas that won’t feel like you’re adding to your to-do list you can try to stop you from feeling stressed and make your mornings positive.  These practices are super quick so that you can do them with ease making them more manageable and achievable.

Gratitude on the go

I’m a big believer in the power of gratitude to help us appreciate the small things in our life that we probably would otherwise miss on a daily basis. It’s a wonderful way to pause and reflect on the good things in our life.

If you haven’t got time to sit down and write a gratitude list in a journal, try to say 3 things that you’re grateful for in your head when you wake up.  This is something really simple that isn’t going to eat into your morning if you’re short on time, but still starts your day on a positive note.

Morning yoga stretches in your pyjamas

Having a good stretch in the morning is a wonderful way to prime your body for the day ahead after a night’s sleep.  You can easily do a couple of sun salutations in your pajamas before hitting the shower and getting ready.  Do it as soon as you wake up to really energise you.

Phone free time in the morning

A habit that I’m always working on is trying to have time away from my screen, especially first thing in the morning.  It’s a tough one, but I am getting better at not checking my phone as soon as I wake up. I love it for creating more mental space for myself and reduces the level of overwhelm.

Look after your skin

We all wash our faces in the morning to freshen up, so why not make it extra special with a simple skincare routine?  It doesn’t have to be extensive, but even using a lovely moisturiser can make you feel good.

Hydrate your body

Making the time to have a glass of water in the morning is one of the simplest ways that you can look after yourself.  Hydrating your body is going to freshen your mind and make you feel more alert so you can take on what the day throws at you better.
