It’s been a while since I posted a soup recipe, but with the bout of cold weather that we have been lumbered with in the UK I thought a hearty soup recipe would help warm us up.
This soup is laden with warming spices, hearty due to the yellow split peas and nutritious due to all of the veggies, what’s not to love?
Ingredients
1 onion sliced
2 carrots diced
1 clove of garlic (optional)
4 chopped tomatoes
handfuls of spinach
1 1/2 cups of yellow split peas
1/2 a can of coconut milk
1 litre of chicken or vegetable stock
1/2 tsp of cumin
1 tsp of garam masala
1/2 tsp of turmeric
Fry the onion, garlic and carrots in some oil, I used coconut oil, until softened. Stir in the spices and coat the onions and carrots until the spices cook out. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for a further 2 minutes. Pour in the yellow spilt peas, coconut milk and stock (I used homemade chicken stock) and bring the soup up to the boil and then let it simmer for 15 minutes. At the last minute add the spinach and allow it to wilt from the heat of the soup.
I’ve had such a craving for warm foods lately that this was perfect for warm lunches as opposed to my usual salads. Soups are definitely a must for me when the weather is so cold…bring on the spring!
What kind of warm foods do you crave in the cold weather?

This looks lovely. I haven’t made soup in a while. I really should with the horrible weather we have at the moment.
It really is a comfort in this awful weather.
Soups are perfect for when the weather is cold. My mom used to make the best split pea soup for me when I was growing up, but she never added these warming spices – sounds wonderful! I love a good bowl of warm oats with banana and AB when I need to take the chill off.
I love oats in this weather, they make the perfect breakfast especially when topped with nut butters. 🙂
I’m not much of a soup person, but I absolutely love love love the pea variety! When I was younger, my favorite place to stop on the way from Los Angeles to Lake Tahoe (about an 8 hour drive!) was Andersen’s Pea Soup restaurant. Your post brings back so many memories 🙂
Awww its lovely how food can conjure up happy memories.
This looks delicious. What is the measurement for the split peas?
I just added it to the ingredients, totally forgot that- 1 1/2 cups. 🙂
This soup sounds amazing, and I LOVE the simplicity of the ingredients! Garam masala is one of my absolute favorite spices to cook with :).
It is fabulous isn’t it and adds so much flavour to a dish.
This sounds like a really tasty soup, it looks perfect for this awful cold weather we’re having!
Soups are perfect for this freezing cold weather. I want spring now please!
