Whether it’s entering an unfamiliar place or meeting somebody for the first time, new experiences can be daunting. I thought the same to myself when I arranged my first ever tutoring lesson through First Tutors. What if the client doesn’t like me? What if I don’t know the answer to a question? What if the tutor’s parent is a teacher themselves? These were just some of the questions I found myself asking.

Well the truth is, these people have so much access to your information, and they will have picked you from a choice of potential candidates, that it is very unlikely you are not compatible. That’s the first part sorted. The second part is simple, just prepare for the session. My first session was 2 hours long, so I got the mother to send me some details regarding the son’s exam board and what he wanted to cover regarding the course (Economics) beforehand, and then planned a session accordingly. And finally, the mother of the boy I was tutoring teaches English abroad, something I didn’t know until I arrived , so make sure you don’t go to sessions unprepared, otherwise you may find that it is not only your first, but also your last session!!

Once the first time nerves are out of the way I quickly found this was the best job I’d had to date. Not only does it pay well, but it is very self-rewarding and as long as you are a good communicator it’s pretty easy too.

As I entered the tutees house, I was welcomed and told the son was waiting in the living room. I spoke to him for 5 or so minutes to get to know him, and asked him where he was struggling so I could tailor my session more towards his needs. As I found myself when learning as a 17 year old, much of the content taught was far too complicated, so simplifying this unnecessary jargon and the complex diagrams so they could be understood was my first port of call. From then onwards time flew , it felt more like a conversation of what I already knew rather than me teaching somebody. We took a break after the hour point, where I was offered tea, toast, and other refreshments. It was all very comfortable.

Furthermore, after finishing the session, the lady offered me extra money for petrol and for the fact I had stayed a little over the allocated time. This meant all in all I walked out with over £50 for my first session, not bad!

You may be thinking that I got lucky, but I have friends who referred me to First Tutors, and they tell similar tales. And if at the end of it all you didn’t like it or decide it wasn’t for you, you aren’t tied into any form of contract; you can simply stop doing it
