Thankfully, how healthy living is defined today varies from person to person. The majority of society has finally woken up (albeit there is still some progress to be made in some areas) to the fact that healthy living is subjective and has finally recognised that we are all individuals; I’m definitely a supporter of the ‘one size does not fit all’ movement.
I’ve previously blogged about the more non-everyday products that I like to use. I do like to think of myself as an ‘amateur foodie’ and experimenting with different ingredients is all part of it; however I’m not convinced that fancy superfood powders are essential for a healthy lifestyle, which is open to opinion. Let’s face it, they can be expensive and when I think back to earlier times I’m sure they weren’t sipping on wheatgrass shots or using protein powders. Of course these more unusual products do have their place in healthy living, I do believe that their inherent healing and health properties are useful, but not necessarily essential.

I often get asked what my desert island food items would be for a healthier lifestyle. When making my list, I was surprised to find that all the items were all pretty ordinary, nothing extremely exotic or unusual at all. I really enjoy eating good honest and simple food, which is both healthy and delicious. Hopefully that comes across well on the blog and my recipes are typically created using ‘regular’ ingredients that everyone would have in their store cupboards at home.
There is an online survey where you can win the nation’s top 10 favourite food items for sharing your own store cupboard essentials.
Which healthy living products would make your desert island list? Do you think that superfood powders and more exotic products are necessary for a healthier lifestyle?

I do love fruit and would particularly want to take Strawberries on a desert island, healthy but still very tasty.

Absolutely! I think strawberries would be great on a desert island.0
All of these would be on my list too 🙂
Great minds obviously think a like!
Banana’s would be my main one- always have at least 2 a day! Avocado, sweet potatoes, oats, dates, greens, chickpeas would definitely be my essentials!
Geez, I forgot ablut avocados and chickpeas. I may need to extend my list.
Hmmmm. What would I choose? Definitely almond milk – that’s a daily staple. As are oats ans chia seeds for my porridge.
I love coconut water and coconut oil but I wouldn’t cry about it if I didn’t have them. Do apples count?? Cake…? I think I’m pushing it here haha.
Apples and cake are certainly allowed and in abundance too.
Definitely coconut water – I’m sure there would be coconuts on the desert island but I’m not sure I’d be able to crack them open! x
Hehe! Good thinking!
I loooove dark chocolate so that would be on my list. And coconut oil because my skin is so dry and it’s such a great moisturizer!
Coconut oil is a fantastic moisturiser, perfect for pampering on a desert island. 😉
I agree with you about superfoods: their health properties are useful, but not necessarily essential.
I like your top 10 list and many of those foods are the ones I would pick such as oats, almond milk, nuts (essential snack for me!), eggs definitely and dark leafy greens. I don’t think I could leave without green tea (antioxidants!) and lemons (detox and colon cleansing!) and bananas! 🙂 But there are so many other foods I would need, so top 20 would have been better! 🙂
I think I would choose chickpeas or hummus to be added to the list, and avocados (unless they grow on the island??).
