Living in an although relatively spacious cottage, has meant that we have had to be creative when it comes to our space and how it is used. We have two nicely sized bedrooms and with our living space downstairs already full there was nowhere to set up my home office on the ground floor. Enter the second bedroom. The second room is actually larger than the room that we use as our master bedroom, but since it’s at the back of the house we feel the location is better as it looks over the garden. Our second room was originally set up as a guest room only, however we figured that there was plenty of space to squeeze in a desk too.

So here is how we have the room set up at the moment. There is plenty of room to fit my desk down the side of the double guest bed and on the other side of the bed is a wall of fitted wardrobes. In terms of decoration and interior design all of the walls are painted white in our house, making it a blank canvas. I prefer a light and airy space provided by neutral colours with a pop of colour from accessories. This is one of my favourite rooms at the moment.
I dressed the bed pretty simply with plain white bed linen from TU at Sainsbury’s. I added a lovely soft throw in a mushroom/brown colour from TK Maxx and another bronze ruffle throw from House of Fraser on top. The scatter cushions are all from Dunelm and were such bargains. The chandelier is also from TK Maxx
On the opposite wall to the bed there is more storage in the form of a shelving unit. We use this to stand our massive mirror on too – it was actually painted gold, but we up-cycled it and gave it a distressed look with some Annie Sloan paint. The chimney breast houses a cool union jack dog, an ‘all you need is love sign‘ which sits behind my Beanie Babies. We hung one of our wedding guest lists here too as it was the perfect size. In front of the bed is a lovely wicker picnic basket, which is also home to Alfie’s leather satchel. One of my favourite features of this room is the old shed door used to enter the room.
Now for my desk, or should I say second home as I spend so much time here. We picked up the large white desk from IKEA a while back, but it’ only recently that I’ve actually added some personality to it. The notice board hanging up contains various postcard and pictures, including our baby boys ultrasound shots to add more colour to the white walls. Alongside the notice board hangs a calendar full of images from our wedding, everyday I’m reminded of that magical day and how lucky I am whilst I work.

Actually on the desk sits my iMac, the best thing EVER! Little colourful trinkets include my Rifle Paper Co notebooks, pink butterfly candle holder from Next, a painted floral summery glass tumbler masquerading as a pen holder. Also, there are a stack of vintage inspired post-it notes with a silver bunny paper weight hiding behind them and a world map trinket box.
The desk is great as it contains so much storage. On the top shelf I added some recycled A4 folders along with some more colourful ones from Paperchase, these are being propped up by a pretty tea light holder. On the lower shelf are some books and an artistic anatomy calendar. There are more shelves at the back of these ones too.
Well that’s it for my guest room and work space room tour. We are going to keep it like this for the time being, but it may be all change again when our little man arrives. He will be sleeping in our room in his moses basket for at least 6 months, but after that we would like to give him his own nursery and playroom. It’s going to be fun getting that all prepared for him and rearranging things. I think a smaller bed frame would mean that my desk could still stay in the room, plus function as a nursery too. Fun times ahead guys!
Do you have a guest room in your house? Have you got a multifunctional room, what do you use it for?

Your work space looks beautiful! I bet the rest of your house is gorgeous, you have such an eye for these things!
Thanks Dana! 🙂
What a gorgeous room. My front room is also my workspace. We have a spare room but it is in the process of being renovated, so unusable right now.
I hope you have fun renovating your spare room 🙂
Wow this spare room is the most gorgoeus have seen in a long time x
Aww thank you Miranda, I’m quite smitten with it.
That bed looks gorgeous
Thank you! 🙂
Love what you have done with this room! All of your features have been kept simple and effective and they work together very well. I love the proper cottagey door you have as well. 🙂
Our spare room was originally going to be used as our office/workspace but it is the far end of the house from the main living area so felt a bit isolated. We do not have much room space within the house itself – at the time we decided we would prefer a larger garden instead! So our spare room is currently a dumping ground for wedding stuff, the spare mattress we have to offer when people stay and Dan’s electric piano along with both our desktop computers, bookshelves and a full size filing cabinet of paperwork. When I first moved in it was a great little workspace, but now, it’s definitely lacking on the space!
Thanks Mary! 🙂 Our spare room was a dumping ground for wedding props and things too initially. It’s nice to close it behind a door and forget about it for a while as it can become very overwhelming.
I love your space! We don’t have a spare room so I have to work wherever I can find a gap in between all the toys, lol

I’m sure I will be working amongst toys etc. once my baby boy arrives 🙂

Thanks Anna. I do love my little space 🙂
Don’t mind me… I’m just saving this post so I can completely copy your desk… it’s so organized and pretty!
Hehhe! I don’t mind at all. 🙂
I wish we had a spare room! I use my front room as my training room so its all a bit cramped round mine, we need to move but are waiting till we find something we really want : )
Taking your time and waiting for that special place is such a great approach. 🙂
Love the light fixture!!!
That’s one of my favourite pieces in the room. 🙂
I love it!! We’ll probably be creating a space like this in our house because we want space for guests, but will also want an office space away from everything else.
Good luck with changing up your space. It’s so much fun. 🙂
What a fantastic room – love your style!
Thank you! 🙂
This room looks so lovely! The cushions on the bed are gorgeous! x

It looks stunning Jemma, I love the shelving unit and upcycled mirror!
Thank you Claire! I’m really pleased with it. 🙂
I love the desk. Beginning to organise my spare room as my new office and was thinking along the lines of wood, think you may have changed my mind. The white desk makes it look so bright. Would love to work at this desk it would give me inspiration to write!! Where better to book exotic holidays at a bright airy desk!!!
I would love to be booking an exotic holiday at my desk right now. 🙂
Ahh pretty room!! I am trying to make our rooms in the apartment pretty.. but it aint happening right now. Hah! Hopefully soon.
Hopefully you will get there soon. 🙂
You’ve got such cute style! This room looks so good!
It’s currently my favourite room, thank you! 🙂
These pictures are gorgeous! I especially love your work area *insert emoticon with the heart eyes here*
Thank you Jayda! 🙂
Love the room! So spacious and cozy 🙂 Our upstairs is one room that we converted into a guest room, but there’s enough room for a desk and such up there. I haven’t had a chance to use it as my extra workspace, but I’m excited to!
I love this! I live in a college apartment, so my bedroom and office are in the same room, even on the same wall! Next year, I’ll have a bedroom that’s a bit bigger, so I’m excited about that. I love seeing bedroom/offices combined!
We have two bedrooms but one is set up as an office- at the moment only Andy has a desk in there but I really need one for work too , so we are trying to work out how to fit two desks in there. I am really looking forward to it because at the moment I use our dining room table but it is a pain to have to clear all my books and folders off when we have dinner.
I love it. I’m buying a new house and I’ll finally have a second bedroom which we are going to use as an office- I’m looking forward to getting a desk with storage and a new computer!
This is all so cute! Love how you have decorated it!
I love your work space. I have turned one of our spare rooms in to an office and it is so nice to have the separate space to do my work that is separate from the rest of the house.
