Buying a house is one thing, but actually making it a home is another. We bought our first house 6 months ago and we’re still so excited by the fact that we finally have a place to call our own after renting for 10 years. We’re now at the stage where we are ready to put our mark on the bare white walls and inject some of our own personality into our brand new home.
We live in the middle of nowhere in a village, there are some quaint traditional houses in the village, but it’s very up and coming and has been developed a fair bit. We adore it here and although we love village life, our taste in interior design is far from traditional. Minimalism is something that both Alfie and I are really into as we hate clutter, which can be difficult when you have a toddler who likes to empty their toy box all over the living floor. Scandi designers have won over our hearts and have been a focus for us when trying to pick things for our home.
You may have heard of the Danish concept of hyyge, it’s massive and a way of living that I’m very on board with. Over the past few weeks, I’ve made some autumn updates to our home to bring in some of that hygge atmosphere. We had some building work done over the summer to build a fake wall (more on that soon) to house the tv and a new fireplace. It was designed with two recesses either side, perfect for tinkering about and filling it with pretty items.
This is my favourite corner in the living room, it’s right by the fire and looks out of the large bay window at the front. I call it my reading nook, and I ‘ve bought a couple of things to make it cosier. Candles are a must, we light one nearly every evening in the colder months, so I was quite taken with the Obi Glass Lantern, it’s so simple but super stylish. I’ve been thinking about putting some fairy lights in it. I’ve got a thing for elephants and instantly fell in love with this Royal Elephant Figurine to add some drama and height. Of course, every good reading corner needs a lamp and I’d had my eye on something like this Talisman Table Lamp for some time and it sits perfectly with our Scandi mustard coloured chairs.
What autumn updates have you been making to your home?

Congrats on moving into your own home! That’s a huge milestone for anyone. I love the little nick nacks you have already! No doubt you’re looking forward to getting it all decorated for Christmas!
Thanks so much! It’s definitely a milestone worth celebrating.
Loved how small and cozy your room looks,I have been decluttering slowly but surely. I just want my home to be small as possible.
Still can’t do candles however….
I do love this little corner of our living room.
I don’t really make a huge amount of changes in the Autumn as I have candles and fairy lights out all the time. I bet my blankets will get more use though x
Yes, we have candles and fairy lights all year round too.
I’m obsessed with the Scandinavian inspired interior. Love your small details.
Me too, so beautiful!
Love your little autumn adjustments 🙂 I always buy far more candles in autumn and get out all the comfy throws 🙂
Candles are a must aren’t they!
My husband and I are currently in the process of all kinds of decorating, including the staircase and hallway, the kitchen and the bathroom. We must be mad to do it all in one go. Of course things have gone horribly wrong, but that is another very different and very time consuming story, I won’t bore you with. Back on topic, I’ve been clearing out all kinds of stuff and am feeling rather liberated. I’ve been reading up about minimalisim, but more like you suggest rather than just nothing at all. (I too have toddler and a teen). I really like your styling, particularly the elephant. Wonderful.
After re-doing our kitchen and living room earlier this year, I’m now sorely tempted to add on an ensuite extension. At the time the disruption was horrible but both rooms now bring me so much joy. I’m enjoying a more intentional and minimalist life this year and spending time in a home I love helps so much
I hope you’re enjoying your lovely newly decorated home. So much hard work, but worth it in the end.
