{Episode 84} Things I’m Tapping Out of This Christmas to Beat Mum Overwhelm

Christmas can be magical, but it can also be absolutely relentless, especially when you’re the default magic-maker of the house. If you’re anything like me, you know how quickly December can spiral into a never-ending cycle of shopping, wrapping, planning, cooking, attending events, organising school things, and carrying the emotional load for everyone around you.

This year, after far too many Christmases where I ended up burnt out and frazzled by Boxing Day, I’ve decided to do things differently. I’m tapping out of certain expectations, pressures, and “shoulds” so I can actually enjoy the season rather than just survive it.

And if you’re feeling overwhelmed too, I hope this list gives you permission to choose ease, simplicity, and joy over perfection.

I’m tapping out of being everything to everyone

I’m no longer playing the role of chief organiser, emotional support counsellor, head chef, activity planner, gift curator, and festive hype woman all at once. I am one person. A human being. And this year, I’m finally owning that.

Instead of automatically saying yes to every request or taking on every task, I’m asking myself: “Do I actually have the capacity for this?”
If the answer is no, I’m allowing myself to let it go.

I’m tapping out of over-giving and over-buying

For years, Christmas meant overspending, overthinking, and overwhelming myself trying to “get it right.” But the truth is, the people who love us don’t need excessive gifts; they need us to be present, calm, and emotionally available.

This year, I’m simplifying gifts, reducing my list, and choosing thoughtful over more. No guilt. No pressure.

I’m tapping out of trying to make every moment magical

Kids don’t need a Pinterest-perfect Christmas. They don’t need daily festive activities or a schedule packed with seasonal perfection. They need warmth, attention, connection, and a parent who isn’t running on fumes.  So I’m releasing the pressure to create endless “moments” and trusting that the small ones count the most.

I’m tapping out of cooking everything from scratch

If it’s pre-chopped, pre-peeled, pre-marinated, or pre-made, it’s going straight in the trolley.  Convenience is not laziness, it’s self-preservation.  This Christmas, I’m buying myself time, energy, and sanity wherever I can. If that means pre-made dessert, frozen Yorkshire puds, or a ready-meal dinner on the days in between, then that is exactly what I’m doing.

I’m tapping out of saying yes to every social invitation

My December calendar is not a Tetris game. I’m no longer squeezing in plans just because I feel obliged to. I’m leaving space for rest, spontaneity, and simply being at home.  If I don’t have the energy, I’m allowed to decline with no justification needed.

I’m tapping out of comparison, especially online

The highlight reels, the perfect homes, the curated Christmas tables, and the matching pyjamas aren’t the full story. They never are because we don’t get to see through the whole window of everyone’s lives on social media.  This year I’m choosing to stay in my lane, protect my peace, and unfollow or mute anything that makes me feel “less than.”

I’m tapping out of the expectation to hold everything together

We often walk into December carrying the invisible load: everyone’s emotions, needs, traditions, and expectations. But we don’t have to hold it all.

This year, I’m asking for help and delegating where I can. I’m letting things be messy, imperfect, and human. I’m reminding myself that shared responsibility is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of healthy family life.

I’m tapping out of ignoring my own needs

Christmas is for the magic makers too, not just the kids, not just the family, but for me. So I’m prioritising small pockets of peace, whether that’s a walk alone, a slow morning, ten minutes with a coffee, or a night where I do absolutely nothing.  We deserve to feel nourished, grounded, and joyful, not depleted.

I’m tapping out of feeling guilty for wanting a simpler Christmas.

Wanting less pressure doesn’t make me ungrateful; similarly, choosing rest doesn’t make me lazy, and setting boundaries doesn’t make me selfish.  I’m choosing a gentler festive season because I want to actually remember it, enjoy it, and feel good in it. And that is something every mum deserves.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed already, you’re not failing. You’re simply human, holding a lot at once.  This Christmas, you get to choose what matters and what doesn’t.  You get to tap out of the noise and tap into what feels good and shape the season in a way that supports you, not drains you.
