A big thank you to all of your comments on my last post. It was quite a tough one to write and to read, conjuring up all sorts of memories. I felt so amazed by the feeling that I wasnโt alone and by sharing my story Iโve relieved a big headache that I have kept locked in side for years. You guys are all really beautiful people with amazing hearts. Iโm truly grateful. ๐
This morning I headed out for my usual weekend long run. It wasnโt my best run at all. I felt uncomfortable through out and queasy. I donโt know why I felt uncomfortable, but the queasiness must have come from me eating peanut butter and dates right before my run. Normally on my runs prefer not to eat anything before hand as all of that pounding on the pavements just turns my stomach unlike a regular gym workout. This morning my stomach was rumbling so I decided on a small snack, but my stomach felt troubled throughout. I did manage to run 10.1 miles in 1 hour 47 minutes though, which Iโm really surprised about. Itโs one minute off my 10 mile PB, but Iโm just glad that I made it. I think how to snack before a run is definitely something that I need to look in to in the future.
Iโve been eating a lot of green smoothies recently and this post run Blueberry and Carob Green Smoothie was perfect after all of that queasiness. It included spinach, a banana, blueberries, spinach, carob. acai berry juice, lucuma and mesquite powders, homemade almond milk, hemp powder, guar and xanthan gum. All simply topped with omega mixed seeds, buck wheaties and cashew nuts.
Lunches have been huge and tasty salads Yesterday for work I mixed up romaine lettuce, red pepper, cucumber, carrots, melon, black beans sunflower seeds and a raw cracker. This was made even better by a yummy dressing made from tahini, lemon and red wine vinegar. Perfect sunshine food! ๐
A highlight for dinner the last few days was a delicious veggie packed stir fry that included carrots, red peppers, pak choi, aubergine, black beans, and onion. I made a very thin broth like sauce using oyster sauce, Chinese 5 spice powder, soy sauce and rice vinegar served with noodles.
Iโve been eating a lot of topped rice cakes recently too. My favourite toppings being peanut butter and chopped dates. I just love the salty and sweet combinationโฆyum!
I just got back from the most amazingly indulgent meal at my favourite restaurant The Saxon Mill with Alfie. It was definitely the highlight of the weekend and a great way to spend a lazy Sunday in the sun.
I hope you all have a great week. ๐ Remember to check out my awesome Rice Dream giveaway, it ends tonight!
Can your stomach handle a snack before a run?
How long do you leave it before eating and working out?
What is your favourite pre-work out snack?

I usually have to eat something before any workout, because other way I feel like fainting five minutes after the workout starts ๐ I eat a small snack, then wait like 30 or 40 minutes and then go for the workout.
I’m not sure how long I would have to wait yet, but is certainly something I’m going o experiment with. ๐
I never think too much about eating before a workout, but then again my version of a workout is a long walk or something fun like skipping or hula hoop so i’m not using up anywhere near as many calories.
Can’t wait to hear about the meal ๐
I love to go on long walks too in the country side especially in the summer. ๐
Looks like you had a wonderful weekend! I must try that rice cake combo ๐ I can’t stomach anything much before working out, I have to force down a few dates before my really long runs but for morning gym and short runs a mug of warm water and lemon is the best I can do! When working out later in the day I love to have a nakd or lara bar an hour before to give me some fuel ๐
The date and PB on a rice cake is seriously good. I hope you like it! ๐
I’ve had to do a lot of experimenting to find out what food my stomach can handle before running. Porridge with dried fruit or banana and some nut butter is great if I’ve got 3 hours for it to go down.
Bananas and plain dates are fine just before the run – but not to much otherwise the volume makes me uncomfortable.
Sometimes I have a few dates, but the PB on Sunday was just a little bit too much for me and was very uncomfortable. I think I will find that balance soon.
The weather has been absolutely gorgeous all weekend here as well. And speaking of gorgeous, love that dress on you ๐ I always have to snack on something before I workout, or I feel like I’m going to faint and end up having a lousy workout. I eat something like a banana and nut butter or a cookie dough ball about 30 minutes before my workout and usually have no problem.
Thanks! I think I’m going to work on trying to find that right balance between being fueled enough for a workout but also not feeling heavy. I have a few ideas in mind already. ๐
Aww sounds like you’ve had a lovely weekend in the sun and you always look so stylish and gorgeous girly!! Oooh I MUST try that rice cake combo…I’ve been having loads of rice cakes with PB and maple syrup recently which I’m totally addicted to but with dates? That sounds amazing too!!
As for snacking before I work out, I’ve been experimenting and the one I’ve settled on at the moment is a Nakd bar because I don’t find them too filling because they’re not big or heavy on my stomach. I normally have one first thing when I wake up and by the time I get to the gym it’s about 30 – 45 minutes later and I have no problem. Then I eat a proper breakfast when I get back and it’s been working well for me so far! ๐
Thanks hunny. I had an amazing weekend. Rice cakes make the bestest snacks. I love your idea of adding the maple syrup…yum! ๐
Sadly I can’t handle anything at all when I used to run first thing, no matter how long the run was (ah, the perils of IBS). Later in the day or pre-race, I always went for bars. Anything else would kill my stomach, and gluten-free ones such as the mini-Nakds are best for afternoon stuffies. Pre-race I used to have Trek or Organic Food Bars.
Beautiful dress and stunning photography: you really have captured the splendour of summer ๐

I definitely always have to fuel up if I work out in the afternoon, but usually in the morning I don’t have to eat anything. So it was quite a surprise when I had hunger pangs first thing. I will be better prepared next time ๐
I’m never hungry after a long run for a while..and then hunger hits HARD all of the sudden! As for pre-workout, my favorite it banana & PB or yogurt for a little protein.
Sounds like you have everything sorted for you pre workout snacks. I’ve never tried yoghurt before a workout. I would be interested to see how my body would handle it.
I usually have a banana or some dried fruit, if I get up early enough I will have a bowl of porridge and I usually do before a cycle ride as it doesnt impact on my stomach but for running I acn’t stomach much
I’m the same. For running I cannot have a heavy stomach at all.
I was loving the sun today too, it came out of nowhere and surprised me! If I’m exercising first thing in the morning I’ll just take a bite out of 9 bar or break off a bit of a banana – more to wake myself up than anything else. If I’ve eaten a full bowl of porridge or something then I like to leave it about 2 hours before breaking a sweat. Anything less and I feel all heavy and get stich a lot more. Well done for powering through though! Love the look of that noodle stir fry!
Thank you! I’m the same. If my stomach feels too heavy my work out just feels impossible. I think it’s about finding the balance between being fuelled up for a workout but feeling comfortable too.
I like just eating yoghurt, fruit and granola before anything like that, otherwise it just sits too heavy in my stomach and I imagine running would be a nightmare feeling weighed down – brilliant time though, especially as I saw on Twitter how early you did it!
Stunning ladybird picture too ๐
Thanks! I like to get my long runs over and done with. ๐
I really like having a couple of dried figs before a morning run or yoga session. It gets me out of bed knowing I have a little sweet snack to keep me going before breakfast! Smoothies or oats before a run don’t sit well with me either, unless I wait 2-3 hours. Hope you find what works for you!
I’m the same I can’t have anything too heavy sitting in my stomach before a workout otherwise I end up feeling ill.
I find it hard to eat right before running, I tend to find porridge about 3hrs before works well for me! Well done on getting through 10 miles with such an iffy tummy!
Thanks! I can’t eat anything right before running either. Maybe I should have timed my snack and run a little better. ๐
Gah that sucks but yay for an awesome mileage anyway! I usually eat carbohydrate foods about an hour before (like banana on toast) but find that fats don’t agree well before a run.
I don’t usually eat before a run as it sits too heavy on my stomach, but in this instance I was so hungry. You seem to know what your body needs before working out which is a really good thing. ๐
That rice cake combo looks so good! I usually try to have a small snack before a morning run unless I’m really not feeling hungry – half a banana or half a Nakd bar.
Your white dress is so pretty and summery. x
Thank you! ๐
OMG great idea!! I never thought of pb and dates on a rice cake, perfect combo!
It’s amazing!
