Every year there is always one token summer fashion item that I always feel self-conscious about wearing.
It’s funny because I always wore shorts as a kid, especially denim shorts. My mum, the avid recycler in this respect, used to cut my old pairs of jeans into shorts and fray the edges. The rise of Daisy Dukes (hot pants) has put me off a bit as it’s not really my style, some people can pull them off fabulously, but unfortunately a big butt means that there a no-go for me. It was always so difficult to find shorts that were both fashionable but also modest. As I got older summer dresses have appealed more to me and fill me with more confidence when wearing them.
Last summer however, whilst planning for my honeymoon I really went crazy over shorts and actually fell in love with them. Over the past few weeks I’ve covered beachwear chic and maxi dresses and summer sandals as part of the height of summer fashion. This week I thought it would be nice to tackle my shorts issue and like last year I have been pleasantly surprised with what the high street has to offer. Here’s a selection of shorts that you can wear in the day, to the office and even out to dinner and they won’t have you looking like Daisy Duke.

1. Patterned shorts, H&M
2. Croc textured culottes, Topshop
3. Scalloped hem shorts, Dorothy Perkins
4. Floral print wrap skort, New Look
5. Tile print shorts, River Island
6. Crepe spotted shorts, Next
7. Floral print woven shorts, Bohoo
8. Chino shorts, H&M
9. Botanical floral shorts, Warehouse
From the skort to the culottes, there really is something for every figure and occasion. I think culottes are super stylish, creating a sophisticated city look and would work well with heels to take you from the office to a night out. The fun prints are great to inject some colour in to a wardrobe. I’m loving the bright botanical floral print shorts from Warehouse and the tile print shorts from River Island. Both would look great with a plain blouse or a simple vest to complete the look.
Hopefully I’ve shown that shorts have come a long way since Daisy Duke’s era and can be everything from fun, sophisticated and stylish!
Have you been getting shorty this summer? What are you favourite style of shorts to wear? Do you feel confident when you wear shorts?

I am a lot more confident with shorts than I ever used to be. I guess my legs are quite muscular from running and I’ve got a dark tan on my legs this year too (also from running!) I still prefer a skirt or dress though unless I’m off out doing something active.
Great to hear that you feel more confident in yourself to wear shorts. I bet you have a lovely tan from all that running 🙂
I can wear shorts, I just can’t do it with bare legs, I don’t know why, just too self conscious I guess. But, I have to say I absolutely love the New Look Skorts…gorgeous!

They are really cute aren’t they! 🙂
I have a pair of £5 black shorts from Peacocks that I bought years ago and they literally got with everything. From just chilling out at a BBQ with a nice summery top, to wearing in the office with a smarter top. And so comfortable. I live in them in the summer!
They sound like such a bargain and your are definitely getting your money’s worth out of them. 🙂
I love the Warehouse and New Look pairs, they’re both lovely! I always feel self conscious in shorts too – the super short styles don’t help my thick thighs that rub together in the summer. 🙁 it’s a curse! xx

Awww! I think it’s hard to find styles that suit your shape. The super short versions are not really my style either as they do nothing for me.
I bloody love shorts! I live in Gap ones (or running ones :P)
Haha! Glad that you love them so much 🙂
Loving number 5! I’mm not big on shorts either but think these are really cute.
Those ones are so cute, love the shade of blue.
I am yet to try skorts, they look good but not sure my non-existent back side would appreciate them lol
I don’t like shorts- I think I am too short so they just seem to show how short my legs are. I like cropped trousers, so tend to opt for those when it is warm.
These are so classy! 🙂
