Well what a week it has been!
On Tuesday I woke up with a horrible cold, it’s my first cold of the autumn and all I wanted to do was hide under the duvet all day. Since I’ve been unwell I decided to stay away from the gym and let my body rest up. Thankfully, my cold seems to be moving on out and I feel much more like myself. My gym bag was all packed and I was looking forward to a gym session after work, that was until I sliced my finger open and ended up in A & E.
So the story is that Alfie left his favourite malt drink which comes in a glass bottle (just my luck!) in the freezer to make it super cold. He forgot it was in the freezer and a major drink and glass explosion happened in the freezer. I was trying to be uber efficient and took some meat out of the freezer to defrost for dinner later and ended up slicing my ring finger quite badly on a pesky piece of glass. It required a trip to the hospital, local anesthetic and stitches. Needless to say it wasn’t your average Thursday morning.
I can now happily report that our freezer has been defrosted and is now glass free, courtesy of Alfie. He looked so guilty bless him! It does get me out of the washing up for a few days though, not going to argue about that.
Anyways, I have eating some really delicious food this week:
Soups have been a staple meal for me this week. They are just so comforting and perfect for when you have a cold. At the weekend I roasted a squash and blitzed it up with some red lentils, homemade chicken stock and rose harissa paste. The spices in the harissa paste have been so good for some cold fighting goodness.
I’ve been loving my figs again this week, they just seem to be in abundance at the moment. They are also really cheap and I have definitely been taking advantage of that fact. They have been in yoghurt messes, topped with nut butter and put in salads like the one above. This one contained mixed leaves, figs, feta cheese, walnuts and rock salt. My belly was dancing summersaults at the sight and taste of this.
A shot of green goodness was much needed this week, especially with my cold. The extra vitamin boost from the greens was greatly appreciated. In the mix was spinach, a banana, almond milk, and water topped with dried nut and fruit and peanut butter.
New snack alert!
Oh my, I love these so much. I received these packets of Katy’s Kettle Corn last week from the lovely people at Popchips. The texture of them reminds a little bit like Skips, which I used to have as a kid. Whenever I had a packet of Skips I would let them dissolve on the tip of my tongue…gross! Ha!
Roasting a chicken at the weekend means that I get to enjoy delicious meals like this at a drop of a hat. This was a roasted chicken breast with roasted beets and carrots, green beans and lemon buttered sautéed potatoes and gravy of course. I really enjoyed this and roasted beets are quite a revelation, they have a totally different flavour.
After that little spell of drama in the week I’m quite looking forward to the weekend. We don’t have anything planned yet, but I’m sure that it will be lovely regardless. As long as it doesn’t involve any glass in a freezer I’ll be quite satisfied. I’ve realised that I am quite a wimp where pain is concerned, those anesthetic injections in my finger were horrid!
How do you cope with pain? Do you have a high pain threshold?
What are you up to this weekend?

Ouch! That looks so painful- I am awful with blood or anything to do with insides- when I fell over running and cut my wrists I nearly fainted at the sight of the blood going down the sink.
You were lucky it wasn’t worse though- my cousin picked up a milk bottle that shattered and he ended up severing a tendon in his wrist and could not use his hand/ wrist for months, and then a couple of years ago my Dad was getting a glass out of the cupboard and it smashed and he severed a tendon in one of his fingers (the day he was meant to be flying to New Zealand)- he needed an op to repair the damage, then had to have physiotherapy after as he had to keep it so still while it repaired (as it was so thin they could not join it back together).
Ooooh all of those injuries sound absolutely awful, glad to hear that they recovered well in the end. You’re right I did come off lightly as it could have been a lot worse. Have a fabulous race! 🙂
Ouch, that finger looks painful Jemma, so sorry to hear about it! Hope it starts healing super fast and you have a brill weekend.
Thanks Claire. I think it looks worse then it is as it doesn’t hurt a bit. Hope you have a fab weekend. 🙂
Ouch that sounds painful, glad you are on the mend! I have the Cardiff half marathon on Sunday so I will just be resting up for that. Have a great weekend!
There seems to be a lot races happening this weekend- Good Luck!! 🙂
Eee that looks super painful! Glad to hear that you’re on the mend — from your stitches and your cold.
I’m okay with pain, but it’s blood that I can’t really handle. That stuff’s just supposed to stay inside, so seeing it usually skeeves me out pretty well.
You are tougher than most where pain is concerned, I’m such a wimp. I seem to be one the mend where both are concerned, thank you. 🙂
Oh no! Sounds painful 🙁 Glad you’re OK now. I hate having to go to the hospital. Such an annoying process.
Your roast chicken meal looks heavenly. Perfect for the cooler temperatures!
I am so sorry about your finger! I thought I had it bad when I got a 3 paper- paper cut! I didn’t think 3 pieces of paper could take such a huge chunk out of my finger. I am in love with your soup recipe, I think I’ll whip that up for lunches at work next week. I hope you heal up quickly! Lovely post, as always 🙂

Thanks Ashley . The soup is really filling and the red lentils really make it more substantial and super creamy.
Oh no, that sounds like a pretty stressful morning, hope your finger is ok now! Enjoy your weekend. I’m running Royal Parks half on Sunday, so excited!
I’ve had better mornings 🙂 But all is ok now and it seems to be healing nicely. Good luck for your run.
Omgsh, girl! That sounds like a nightmare~It must have been a very large cut if you needed stitches–you’re pretty brave and awesome for keeping up a good attitude, though. 😉 Hope you get better soon and take care of yourself~
ps: You’re reminding how much I’ve been lacking in smoothies lately. Must make one really soon, maybe today?!
It doesn’t look too pretty Ellie, but apparently it will heal nicely. 🙂
God hope ya finger heals quick, nightmare!
Thanks hun. Surprisingly it doesn’t hurt a bit.
