Pumpkins are everywhere at the moment and I for one am totally happy about this fact. Along with figs, they’re one of my most favourite things about this season and there are so many varieties out there. Before starting my blog I’m pretty sure that I didn’t even know what a smoothie was, milkshakes yes, but the idea of a smoothie seemed to have eluded me. Funny that I can’t live without smoothies in my life now. This pumpkin pie inspired smoothie full of cinnamon and nutmeg is perfect for this time of year and who doesn’t like desserts in smoothie form?

I started out with a basic fruit smoothie but then started to get experimental by adding dark leafy greens to them to create an alkaline busting green smoothie. Now I add all sorts to my blender including nutritional powders and coconut oil to make a wonderful and nourishing smoothie to start my day or as an afternoon snack. I find them wholesome and filling and they require very little effort to make. All you really need is a blender and your imagination.
Speaking of blenders, you don’t have to have a top of the range all singing and all dancing one at that. A basic blender will do the job just fine and a hand blender would work well too.

- 1/2 cup cooked pumpkin
- 1 cup /250ml coconut water
- 1 cup /250ml almond milk
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1-2 tsps maple syrup
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp mixed spice
-
Pour all of the ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth.
-
Serve and enjoy!
If you’ve never tried a smoothie before it can be quite daunting as you’re not quite sure how it’s going to turn out. I’ve had some right smoothie disasters in the past, believe me, some of them have tasted gross. Now I think I’ve got the hang of what combinations of fruit and greens work for me. As a smoothie novice, I tended to stick to simple things that I knew that I would like and stayed away from adding greens for a while, before feeling daring and increasing the amount of spinach that I added each time. The smoothie recipe that I have for you today is perfect for a beginner and for this time of year – I’m loving all the pumpkin recipes around at the moment!
This easy pumpkin pie smoothie can be used as a starting point for many other creations. Eventually, you could start to add greens such as spinach in small amounts and build up to create a green smoothie; you can read more about their health benefits here. Other ingredients that you could add are protein powders, nutritional powders, coconut oil, nut butters, dried fruits and seeds to create something tasty and nourishing. Either way, this is a great starting point for any smoothie virgins out there and you will build up your confidence with them quicker than you think. Happy blending!
