At last! I’m really excited because today is the day that I can finally reveal an exciting project that I’ve been working on! I’ve partnered up with HomeSense to share my healthy baking hack to help raise money for Sport Relief.
Baking and sweet treats are a passion of mine and because I love to eat them so much I always like to try to make them as healthy as possible – just so I can faceplant myself into more delicious sweet goodness. There are lots of different ways that you can experiment with your bakes to make them healthier, but one of my favourite ways is to use natural sugar alternatives instead of refined sugar.
Refined processed sugar is typically used in all our favourite shop-bought cakes and sweet goods, leading to dramatic spikes in your blood sugar that can leave you feeling sluggish. My healthy baking hack, to use natural sugar alternatives such as agave syrup, date syrup, honey and maple syrup which won’t result in sugar highs because of their lower glycemic index.
Today I’m sharing a variation of my Sweet Potato Waffle recipe to demonstrate how natural sugar alternative maple syrup can be used to make a sweet breakfast favourite as well as get in one of your 5 a day too!

- 1 cup mashed sweet potato
- 1/4 cup wholemeal self-raising flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
-
Preheat the waffle maker as per the manufacturer's instructions
-
In a bowl, mix together the mashed sweet potato, flour and cinnamon until well combined.
-
Beat in the eggs and then pour in the maple syrup and coconut oil.Β Mix until smooth.
-
Pour the batter into the waffle iron and cook for a few minutes until ready (cooking times may vary).
-
Serve with fresh berries and a drizzle of maple syrup.

You can watch me make my Sweet Potato Waffles in my kitchen in the video above.
You can get your hands on the gorgeous limited edition Orla Kiely apron designed especially for Sport Relief that I’m wearing in the video from your local TK Maxx and HomeSense stores or online. At least Β£5.25 of each sale from every apron sold goes straight to Sport Relief.
To help raise even more money for Sport Relief, why not host a bake sale using my healthy baking hack idea. I would love to see all of your healthy bakes!
Have you ever held a bake sale to help raise money for charity? Are you taking part in any Sport Relief activities this year?

Sugar is sugar to the body, ultimately. They’re all pretty darn high GI.
Not really! Refined processed sugar can have dramatic effects on blood sugar levels. Natural sweeteners are more gentle and have far better nutritional profiles.
Immediate blood sugar levels, absolutely, no contest there. I just see people loading up on the “healthier sugars” and avoiding refined, when, in reality, we should just lower the whole consumption of sugars. Once the sugar passes through the stomach and reaches the small intestine, it doesnβt matter if it came from an apple or a soft drink.
Anything in high consumption is going to have an overall effect even healthier foods. It’s all about moderation and finding a healthy balance.
Yes. Sorry, I was just mislead by your intro of “I just love to eat them so much” and thought it was worth mentioning in case anyone read this the same way I did and thought one could eat natural sugars as much as they wanted without caring about the sugar consumption as much as they would with unrefined sugars.
No worries at all! ?
Looks delicious and easy to make, my kind of recipe. Love the apron, so cute!
The apron is fab isn’t it! Limited edition too! ?

Thanks Janie! I just watched your Back To Basics video, loved it!

These look delicious! We make banana pancakes regularly in our house with honey as a Sweetener. I will give these waffles a try xx
Thanks Sarah! π I haven’t made banana pancakes in a while, must change that!
Such a good idea to use vegetables in waffles. Love the maple syrup in these too.
You can’t beat maple syrup in and drizzled on top of waffles. π
I’m not that keen on sweet potatoes but may give this recipe a try.
Definitely agree with u on using natural sugars. But always in moderation.
You can’t actually taste them ,it’s just a lovely way to get more veggies into your diet. π
Great minds think alike – I have a sweet potato recipe coming soon too π I am just obsessed with them, and they make a nice change to regular waffles.
They’re so lovely and I love that the sweet potato gives the waffles that extra nutrient boost.
Sweet Potato Waffles? Ok, these sound seriously delicious- my daughter will especially love them!
Oh I hope she likes them if you ever make them for her.
My daughter’s school holds bake sales all the time to raise money. A lot of the parents help out. It’s actually amazing how much they raise each time!
It’s such a lovely way to raise money for charity.
Oh they look delicious! Love the apron!
Thanks, I adore the apron too!
I do like using sugar alternatives but it is hard to swap in liquid sweeteners to a lot of recipes as they mess up the consistency of the dough or batter.
Very true! I tend to use less and judge it as go at first. It’s definitely trial and error!
These look delicious – I can’t bake at all, I must try this year I think! Kaz
A recipe recipe like this is a perfect starting point for you then. ?
Looks oh so tasty at the same time as being nice and simple, I may have to give it a try
