There seems to be a new fashionable health fad every other week, or is it just me?

They seem to range from the expensive and weird to the potentially sensible offerings.  With the majority of us switching on and trying out a healthier way of living, we are constantly being bombarded with the latest health fads that we should be trying in order to achieve better health and well-being.  There is so much out there it can be hard to decipher what to take seriously and what to kick to the curb.  To be honest, I tend to ignore a lot of it, but tune in from time to time because it is interesting. On the contrary, there are some health fads that I’ve tried, love, and now couldn’t live without.  Here are some of my current favourites, which I have incorporated into my lifestyle with relative ease.

Coconut oil

I can’t get enough of this stuff at the moment and as mentioned in last weeks Tried and Tested post I adore this little miracle in a jar.  Of course, there is its generic use as an alternative to cooking oil, but there are so many other beneficial uses for coconut oil.  During my pregnancy, I’ve been slathering it on practically every day as a moisturizer on my bump and rest of my body, leaving my skin feeling silky smooth.  Another one of my favourite methods to use it is in my smoothies or as an alternative to butter in my baking and to make homemade raw chocolate.

Warm water and lemon

Gillian McKeith was on to something when she encouraged everyone to start drinking this wonderful natural elixir first thing in the morning. Healthy living bloggers brought it to my attention and as Beth explains it has many health benefits.  For me, it feels like a mini detox every morning that flushes out the toxins from the day before.  It’s become a habit that I struggle to live without and is now part of my daily routine.

Chia seeds

When I first heard of chia seeds I was intrigued and both scared by them.  They don’t look very appetising and to be fair are quite bland in taste. However, their nutritional value is immense as well as their protein content.  I like to use them in overnight oats, chia seed puddings or sprinkled over yoghurt and cereal.

Pre-work out snacks

This is a take it or leave it one for me and really depends on how I’m feeling at the time.  At the moment, I’m only working out in half-hourly stints so sometimes feel that I don’t need a pre-workout snack.  If I’m working out in the morning and feeling hungry I will have one, but if I’m still full from the night before then I tend to go without and still feel fine.

Green smoothies

Ahhh…this is possibly one of the best blogging discoveries ever!  I remember sipping on my first green smoothie and being totally surprised by how wonderful it tasted.  Now I make them regularly each week for breakfast or as a snack.  Check out my post on green smoothies for the low-down on these super green wonders.

Omega-3’s

The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids have been well documented for a while now.  Not only are they proven to increase the health of your heart but they’re also known to increase cognitive function.  I tend to get my fix by eating fatty fish such as salmon or mackerel at least 1-2 times a week as opposed to taking supplements.

What crazy healthy fads have you come across recently?  Have you taken any on board?  How did they work for you?
