Let’s be honest, many of us make new years resolutions with every intention of sticking them out, but by the end of January we have lost the will to live and all of those resolutions have fallen to the way side. This is the main reason why I don’t make resolutions anymore. I think the main explanation for the fact that I always failed is because they always seemed so big and daunting. I’m not against resolutions at all and I think that it’s important to think ahead, but I have found that a different approach works better for me:
Essentially, it’s much more practical for me to breakdown overall goals into small steps to make them more achievable. Each small step will take you on a journey to your end goal. It’s all about taking that first step to make that change – you will make it!
Instead of making new years resolutions, I tend to take a more laid back approach and set myself a list of things that I would like to achieve throughout the year, which I have listed below:
1. Take a photography course
I got a new tripod for Christmas and I intend to put it to some good use by perfecting my amateurish photography. There are some local photography courses that look great and I‘m all set to become a student once again.
2. Forget about perfectionism and just let go
I think sometimes I do tend to hold back in certain aspects of my life as I’m a bit of a perfectionist at heart and believe that some things should be done a certain way. However, I’m looking to change this and becoming more relaxed in the upcoming year. I’m really looking forward to relinquishing some of the restraints that I put on myself.
3. Pushing those boundaries
Recently I have become stuck in a rut in so many aspects of my life. Whether it be my fitness routine or my eating habits I think that it’s important to set yourself challenges and step outside of your comfort zone every now and then.
4. Read and write more
I love to read and write and it’s one of the reasons that I got into blogging in the first place. With one thing or another I have being doing both less and less, but this is something that I want to pick up again in 2014.
5. Build and develop my blog
This is something that I have wanted to do for a while, but time restraints have put this on hold. I’m hoping to develop C&C over this next year, including creating a newsletter and maybe a revamp. Exciting times ahead folks!
6. Progress in my career
Even though I am happy in my current position at work I would like to progress further and this is another thing that I want to work on in 2014.
7. Travel
Last year was a great year to travel for me with trips to Rome, Sri Lanka and The Maldives. I would love to see more of the world and we are currently planning a trip to Denmark in the near future.
Right. That’s me all set to tackle 2014 with a head on approach. Generally I just want to have fun this year and live for the moment more, who knows what will happen. There are some more personal things that I would like to achieve, but I will address them when they crop up and I also want to save, save, save. Whether my list is achievable for me in 2014 is a mystery and something which I believe is out of my hands. Que Sera, Sera. The way I see it is that I have a life time ahead of me to accomplish and embark on these things so there is no worry if they are not executed this year or the next. I’ve got a great feeling about this new year and I cannot wait to get stuck in.
What would like to accomplish in 2014?
Do you believe in setting new year resolutions?

I never set resolutions as I always feel they are just setting yourself up to fail. I have things I work towards, but that is all really.
A trip to Denmark sounds very exciting!
I’m the same as I never achieved any resolutions in the past. I actually prefer to make a list of things I would like to achieve and do. We are looking forward to the trip to Denmark, I have never been. 🙂
I’m not a huge believer in resolutions. I like more as goals to try and hit. I think it’s important to have direction, but not obsession.
I definitely want to run a marathon this year. But, more importantly, to be injury-free for as much of the year as possible. Whether those goals are mutually exclusive, I’m not sure yet.
A marathon would be amazing Anna! Good luck, that would be an amazing achievement. 🙂
I’m not going to set any goals as such just see what happens all I want is to be happy have fun and enjoy 2014!
A great out look to have in my book! I hope 2014 is your best yet!
Great goals Jemma – I love the way you’ve focused on long-term developments and things that will enrich your life. Can’t wait to hear how the photography course goes!
Thanks Claire! It’s definitely something that I have wanted to so for a while. Hopefully improvements will be seen along the way.
I have a couple of goals for 2014 including completing London duathlon, using my cook books more, having more ‘me’ time, and getting faster at running! Love the sound of your goals, I’d love to do a photography course.
Nice goals, have a wonderful 2014!
You too Lauren!
