Mindset Shifts To Make Self Care Happen

Does self-care feel like something you’d like to have in your life, but you can’t figure out how?  Does it feel like a myth because you don’t seem to have the time? Do you need to make some mindset shifts to make it happen?

I hear you and I see you.

This is something that comes up for my coaching clients all the time and it’s always such a joy for me when I help them see that actually it is possible to make time for themselves.   Although initially, it may feel like another thing to add to the to-list when you’re starting out, I love to help break it down into realistic and practical steps so it’s more achievable in their lives.

There are many reasons why you haven’t been able to create a self care routine that sticks, but the biggest reason is your mindset.  There are different elements to this and these learned behaviours can be difficult to unravel. It takes work, effort, and motivation to make these mindset shifts happen, however, it’s such a worthwhile investment and one that you’ll never regret.

Mindset is at the very foundation of everything that we do and the decisions we make – even down to how we treat and nourish ourselves. It’s important that we’re telling ourselves the right stories if we’re to truly nourish ourselves and create a life that we love.

If you want to practice self care like a boss you need to get over some of these mindset blocks and myths:

Self care is not selfish

Guilt is a big factor for not putting the structures in place for practicing self care – I see it all the time. There’s never a wrong time to honour your body’s needs. Let that sink in – there’s only ever a RIGHT time and no guilt should be felt over that.

Let’s flip that mindset, right now.

Instead, focus on how creating space for yourself is creating more space and energy for everything that you have in your life.  The sole purpose of investing in yourself means that you can give more because there is more of you to give.

The funny thing about self care is that it’s not just about you, it’s also about everyone around you. Everything and everyone will get the best of you when you put yourself first, which is why I always say that self care is selfless, NOT selfish.

Self care is not time-consuming

How you create space for yourself can look like many different things, like a 5-minute meditation, a gentle walk in nature, a soak in the bath, reading a book – none of which takes too much time.

To make self care happen it’s more realistic to focus on the small things that you can do for yourself that are going to support you and make you feel more balanced.

I always get my clients to write a list of all the small actionable things that they can do for themselves that they can refer back to. This acts as a reminder that actually there are plenty of things that will bring them joy that won’t take up too much time.

Self care is not expensive

It’s not about the glamour or big gestures, but the gentle and small actions that you can take every day to guide you towards a state of alignment, harmony, and grounding.  The crux of the matter is that self care doesn’t have to cost anything because it’s not about the big expensive holidays or spa days, it goes much deeper than that. Instead, give focus to simplicity as this will enable you to implement a daily self-care practice that will last.
