Keeping Your Kids Safe in the Car

For most families, travelling by car is an essential part of everyday life. From school runs to family holidays to sports clubs, shopping trips and playdates, kids spend a lot of time in the family vehicle, and while modern cars tend to be safer than they have ever been before, as a parent, it is still important that you take the time to reduce risks on the road and keep your kids safe. Here are some key ways to do just that.

Use the correct car seat

One of the most important safety measures is ensuring your child uses the correct car seat for their age, height, and weight. Car seats are designed to provide protection during sudden stops or collisions, but they can only do their job properly if they are installed and used correctly.

Make sure:

  • The seat is appropriate for your child’s size
  • It is fitted according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Harnesses are adjusted correctly
  • The seat remains securely attached

Many local authorities and retailers offer car seat fitting advice if you are unsure.

Check seat belts every time

As your kids grow, they will need to move from car seats to booster seats to using standard seat belts, and when that happens, it is really important that you check their seat belts fit correctly.

Seat belts should always sit across the chest and shoulder and not the neck, and the lap belt should rest across the hips and not the stomach. Oh, and you should make sure they have their seat belts on every time because most journeys happen close to home, so even if they’re going just a short distance, they need to buckle up.

Avoid driver distractions

Children can be wonderfully entertaining, but they can also be distracting.

Whenever possible:

  • Set up entertainment before starting the journey
  • Keep snacks accessible
  • Plan comfort breaks for longer trips
  • Avoid turning around while driving

Maintaining focus on the road is one of the most effective ways to protect everyone in the vehicle. The safest response to a back-seat disagreement is usually waiting until you can stop safely rather than attempting to referee while driving.

Keep the vehicle well-maintained

It is really important, if you want to keep your kids (and yourself) safe on the road, that you take vehicle maintenance seriously and do regular checks ot make sure your tyres, brakes, lights, ssteering and other critical systems are always in decent working order, so boo a service for Kia or have a mechanica check over your Ford, and do this regularly according to the manufacturers’ recommended schedule, and if anything feels off in between, get that cked out ASAP, too.

Teach good passenger habits

Children benefit from learning safe travel habits from an early age.

Encourage them to:

  • Stay seated properly
  • Keep seat belts fastened
  • Avoid distracting the driver
  • Enter and exit the vehicle safely
  • Wait for adult assistance when necessary

These habits help build long-term awareness and responsibility. The earlier children learn good vehicle safety practices, the more natural those behaviours become.

Safety first every time!
