{Episode 94} Mum guilt and letting go when life gets busy
Last week, I didn’t publish a podcast episode.
If you know me, past me would have spiralled. The guilt. The overthinking. The inner negative voice whispering, “You’re falling behind, everyone else has it together, and you’re failing.”
But last week was half-term. I’m a mum of four, and the house was full of energy, noise, and chaos. Life was busy, messy, and wonderfully unpredictable, and something had to give.
For years, missing something like a podcast episode would have come with a heavy side of shame. But this time, I made a conscious choice: I let go of guilt and practiced self-compassion, and I want to share what I learned from that experience.
The Pressure Ambitious Mums Put on Themselves
As ambitious mums, we don’t just want to be “good mums.” We want to show up consistently, grow our careers or businesses, stay visible, keep our promises, and be organised, patient, and productive, all at once.
And when one of those plates drops, the guilt creeps in. Missing a podcast episode might sound small, but to someone who values consistency and growth, it can feel like a failure. Thoughts like, “I’m not disciplined enough” or “Maybe I’m not cut out for this” can be overwhelming.
The truth is, mum guilt often disguises itself as ambition. It tells us that our worth is tied to our productivity. But your value is not measured by how much you achieve. You are enough, even when life doesn’t go according to plan.
Life Doesn’t Pause for Your Plans
Half term reminded me of a simple truth: life doesn’t pause just because we have a content calendar or business plan. Children don’t care about your deadlines. They don’t respect batching days. They demand your attention, energy, and presence.
When we embrace that reality instead of fighting it, something beautiful happens. We start to release unnecessary guilt and start to see that our schedules are a framework, not a rulebook. We learn that flexibility is not failure; it is a strength.
What Letting Go of Guilt Taught Me
Choosing self-compassion over guilt has taught me several important lessons:
-
Your value is inherent. Missing an episode, a meeting, or a task does not make you less worthy.
-
Consistency is a long-term game. One missed deadline does not define your commitment or capability.
-
Self-compassion is contagious. When children see us treat ourselves kindly, they learn that mistakes and flexibility are part of life.
-
Balance is about perspective, not perfection. Life will always be messy. How we respond matters more than how “perfect” we appear.
