{Episode 91} No 5am starts: How to make time for yourself as an overwhelmed mum
As mentioned in the podcast episode, you can get your copy of Gentle Morning Self-Care For Busy Overwhelmed Mums.
If you’re an overwhelmed mum who feels like there’s never any time left for you, you’re not alone.
Between parenting, work, running a household, and carrying the mental load, “time for yourself” can feel like something other people get, not you. And if you’ve ever been told the solution is to wake up earlier, follow a strict routine, or just be more organised, this is your permission slip to ignore all of that.
There are no 5am starts here.
This post is about how to make time for yourself as a mum in a way that actually fits real life, especially if you’re exhausted, overstimulated, solo parenting, or self-employed.
Why So Many Mums Struggle to Find Time for Themselves
Most mums don’t lack motivation or discipline. What they lack is space.
From the moment you wake up, someone needs something from you: your time, your energy, your attention. Even when you sit down, your brain is still running through to-do lists and responsibilities.
Many mums tell themselves they’ll focus on themselves later:
-
when the kids are older
-
when work calms down
-
when life feels less intense
But the truth is, that quieter season doesn’t just arrive. And “later” is often where your needs quietly disappear.
Finding time for yourself as a mum isn’t about poor planning. It’s about being overloaded in a system that expects you to cope.
Why “Just Wake Up Earlier” Doesn’t Work for Overwhelmed Mums
Let’s talk about the advice to wake up earlier.
If you’re already tired, depleted, and running on empty, the answer is not stealing more sleep from your body. Waking up at 5am might work for some people, but for many mums it simply adds another layer of exhaustion.
Rest matters, your nervous system matters, and your energy matters.
Making time for yourself doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from noticing how often you put yourself last without even realising it, and gently choosing differently.
How to Make Time for Yourself Without Hustle or Guilt
Here’s the part that often surprises people: making time for myself hasn’t meant adding more to my day. It’s meant letting some things go.
1. Stop Waiting Until You’ve “Earned” Rest
You don’t need to finish everything before you deserve a break. If you wait until the house is tidy, the inbox is clear, and everyone else is happy, you may never stop.
Rest is not a reward, it’s a need.
2. Let Some Things Slide (On Purpose)
Some days that means easy dinners, extra screen time, or a mess that can wait. This isn’t failure, it’s prioritising your energy over perfection.
3. Use Small Pockets of Time
You don’t need hours. Ten uninterrupted minutes can genuinely shift how you feel. Sitting in the car, stepping outside for a breather, or choosing not to scroll before bed all count.
4. Stop Copying What Self-Care “Should” Look Like
Self-care doesn’t need to look aesthetic or impressive. It needs to work for you. What actually refuels you may look very different from what you see online.
The Hidden Cost of Always Putting Yourself Last
When you constantly put yourself last, the cost isn’t just tiredness.
Over time, many mums lose touch with who they are outside of being needed. Joy shrinks, and resentment builds; you begin to feel like you exist only to keep everything else running.
Reclaiming time for yourself isn’t selfish. It’s essential.
Your children don’t need a burnt-out version of you. They need you grounded, present, and human.
A Gentle Reframe for Busy Mums
If you’re thinking, “I don’t have time for myself,” try this instead:
What is one small pocket of time you could reclaim this week, not to be productive, not to improve yourself, but simply to be with yourself? Because you don’t need a new routine, you don’t need to overhaul your life, you just need to decide that you still matter in this season.
