{Episode 86} New year, your year: Goal-setting for ambitious mums who are exhausted but dreaming big

If you’re a mum heading into the New Year feeling both ambitious and overwhelmed, you’re in exactly the right place. So many mums secretly hold big dreams for themselves: new careers, personal growth, healthier habits, more joy, more fulfilment, but are also completely wiped out by the mental load, the invisible labour, and the relentless pace of life with kids.

You want a fresh start. You want a better year. But you also need something realistic. Something flexible. Something that doesn’t depend on three hours of quiet time and an uninterrupted morning routine (because let’s be honest, that’s not happening in most homes).

This blog post is here to help you find a gentler, more empowering way to set goals for 2026, without burning out or adding more pressure to your already-full plate.

Why Traditional New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work for Mums

Typical New Year’s resolutions tend to be big, dramatic, and completely disconnected from the messy, real-life world of motherhood.

They usually sound like:

  • “I’ll change everything starting on January 1st!”

  • “I’m going to completely reinvent myself overnight!”

  • “I’m going to be consistent every single day no matter what!”

And then the first week back after the holidays hits and you’re tired, the kids are melting down, sleep is broken, the house is chaos, and you suddenly feel like you’ve “failed” before you’ve even started.

But the truth is: you didn’t fail. The method did.  Mums need flexible, feeling-led, sustainable goals that can bend with real life.

A Better Way to Set Goals as an Overwhelmed, Ambitious Mum

Let’s flip the script and approach the year ahead with goals that reflect who you are and what your life actually looks like.

1. Focus on how you want to feel, not what you want to do

Instead of picking tasks or outcomes, start with emotions.  Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to feel calmer?

  • More confident?

  • More fulfilled?

  • More like myself again?

Once you know the feeling you’re chasing, you can reverse-engineer the actions that support it.

2. Break everything down into micro-steps

Ambitious mums have big visions, but small steps are what actually carry you there.
Five minutes a day.
One small habit.
One tiny shift.
Give yourself permission to start ridiculously small.

3. Build gentle accountability

Whether it’s a friend, a partner, or a coach, having someone who sees your goals and cheers you on is powerful. You’re so used to holding everyone else accountable, give yourself some support too.

4. Celebrate every tiny win

Mums often wait until something is “finished” before celebrating. But your momentum comes from acknowledging progress along the way, not at the end.

5. Be willing to adapt

Kids get sick. Work gets busy. Life happens.  Your goals shouldn’t break under pressure, they should flex with you.

You Don’t Need a “New You” – You Need a “Supported You”

You don’t need to reinvent yourself this January and you don’t need to change everything overnight.  What you need is support, clarity, and a plan that actually works for the season you’re in.

And that’s exactly why I created The Year of You workshop.

How the Year of You Workshop Helps Ambitious, Overwhelmed Mums

This powerful, immersive session is designed to help you step into 2026 with clarity and confidence, without spending hours planning alone or getting lost in the noise of everyone else’s goals.

One mum said:
“I left the session feeling like I had finally built a year that fits my life, not someone else’s expectations. It was the first time in ages I focused on myself without guilt.”

You Deserve a Year That Works for YOU

The New Year is a beautiful opportunity, not to become a whole new person, but to reconnect with who you already are. As a mum, your goals matter, as does your joy and personal growth.

And with the right support, you can absolutely create a year that feels nourishing, aligned, and achievable.
