[Episode 80] 5 quick self-care rituals for mums to stay calm and grounded this summer

Summer holidays.

The kids are home, the days are long, and the overwhelm creeps in before your morning cuppa is even finished.

As a mum, you’re expected to be the entertainer, referee, snack distributor, and emotional sponge — all while somehow “making memories” and “soaking up every moment.” 😅

But here’s what I want to gently remind you:

You don’t need an hour. Sometimes, five minutes is enough.

It might be all you get because the summer holidays are full on with very little headspace, time, and energy. And the good news? That can still be powerful.

Why Traditional Self-Care Doesn’t Work for Mums

Let’s be honest — most self-care advice floating around the internet wasn’t designed for mums in the thick of summer chaos.

  • “Wake up earlier.”

  • “Book a massage.”

  • “Take a weekend away.”

Lovely ideas… but not always realistic when you’re running on broken sleep, juggling multiple meltdowns a day, and trying to keep everyone alive, fed, and vaguely entertained.

That’s why we need a different kind of self-care — rituals that work with your life, not against it.  Something that doesn’t add to yuor already full plate, but meets you where you are.

What’s the Difference Between a Routine and a Ritual?

Where routines are about productivity, rituals are about presence. They’re tiny pauses filled with intention, and they can shift your energy in just a few moments.

You don’t need to be alone. You don’t need silence. You don’t need 45 minutes.

You just need a window. A breath. A way to reconnect with you.

5 Summer Rituals for Busy Mums (That Take Less Than 5 Minutes)

Here are five of my favourite soul-sparking summer rituals to help you feel more grounded, present, and sane — even in the chaos.

1. The Bathroom Door Pause

Before you step out of the bathroom and back into the noise, place your hand on your heart and ask:

“What do I need in this next hour?”

Not what everyone else needs — you.  This one-minute reset helps you re-enter from a place of awareness, not autopilot.

2. Sunshine Sips

Instead of gulping down your tea while standing at the sink, take it outside — even if it’s just for five minutes.

Feel the sun (or breeze!) on your face. Sip slowly. Breathe deeply.

✨ This is nervous system nourishment in real time.

3. The One-Line Journal

At the end of the day, scribble down just one thing you loved.

Not what you achieved. Not how well-behaved the kids were. Just one tiny, beautiful moment.

✨ This rewires your brain for gratitude without needing a fancy journal or 20 minutes of silence.

4. Foot-to-Floor Reset

Wherever you are, plant your feet and feel the ground beneath you.  Say to yourself:

“I am here. I am safe. I am enough.”

✨ This simple ritual grounds you and brings you back to the present, especially during stressful moments.

5. Phone-Free 5

Choose five minutes in your day to ditch the scroll.  No emails. No messages. Just you, your breath, and whatever is in front of you — even if it’s just buttering toast.

✨ You’ll be surprised how calming this one is. Presence is powerful.
