Breaking Through The Plateaus In Your Fitness Journey

When really getting into a fitness kick, there are two major challenges that most people face on the way. The first is learning how to get started and to get consistent. The second is when you hit a plateau, and you’re suddenly not making gains or progress as well as you once were. It can be demoralising, especially if you haven’t reached your goals yet, but it’s not necessarily the end of your story. You could break through them.

Ramp Up The Difficulty

The reason that your body typically hits a plateau is that you simply aren’t challenging your body as much anymore. If you’re doing the same exercises with the same reps, same weights, and same sets, then your body will adjust to it, and it will become easier and easier to do, which also means that it’s going to stall your progress. You have to keep pushing your progress with progressive overload, which is the gradual increase of stress on the muscles to encourage growth and adaptation. Start increasing the difficulty, and you’ll start seeing results again.

Aim For Intensity

If you’re already used to your strength training exercises, and you want to go beyond increasing weight or reps, then you should think about intensity instead. High-intensity training methods push your body out of its comfort zone and demand more effort, leading to greater adaptation. For strength-training exercises, this can include using more demanding equipment like a slamball, while for cardio, it might mean incorporating full-speed sprints or explosive movements in your sessions. Intense exercises need to be done with care, however, to avoid injuring yourself.

Switch Up Your Exercises

Another reason for fitness plateaus is repetitive movement patterns. When you perform the same exercises over and over, your muscles become efficient at them, reducing the stimulus needed for growth. Changing your routine not only prevents boredom but also forces your body to adapt in new ways. There are a lot of different movements you can do for strength training, including different types of squats, weight lifting techniques, and more to engage different muscles. Similarly, for cardio, switch up to what you’re not used to. If you regularly go running for long distances, try stair climbing, cycling, or rowing instead.

Ensure You’re Getting The Right Nutrition

While exercise is how you break down your muscles to rebuild them, as well as burn the energy to shift weight, your results are going to be a lot slower if you’re not supporting it with smart nutrition. Using tools to measure your macros can ensure that you’re getting the protein you need for muscle repair and growth, not to mention the right mix of fat and carbs to support your general body function and provide the energy you need to get through your workouts. You can’t skip nutrition.

Every plateau you hit does become a little harder to break through, which is why it’s important to invest time in continually pushing yourself further and trying new workouts to maintain that steady progress until you reach your goals.
