How to Be Intentional With Your Energy
How are you positively channeling your energy to get you closer to your goals?
Are you spending time effectively on the things that are going to help you thrive?
These are key questions to check in with yourself in order to protect your energy and ensure that you’re putting it towards things that are going to serve you and bring you joy rather than drain you.
So often, and this is totally me too, we focus hard on the things that perhaps aren’t good for us because we’re worried about what other people may think, too scared to say no, don’t want to be seen doing the wrong thing or fear the consequences if we don’t say yes to what’s requested of us. There’s a multitude of reasons why we’re not taking up the opportunity to hold space for ourselves and take back control of how we want to show up in the world.
There are times where I’m making bad investments with my time and energy and it would be better spent elsewhere, on things that support and uplift me.
It’s always a learning curve, but dropping those energy drains, especially the things that are out of my control can be a massive healer.
Checking in with yourself with where you’re focusing your energy and seeing where you need to adjust things can help to reduce the overwhelm and mental chaos that ensues. Being smart with your energy and spending it on what serves you rather than depletes you can be especially important in times of need when you’re feeling vulnerable and anxious.
This is why I’m sharing some simple yet powerful tips on how you can become more intentional with your time and energy to help create more space for the things that nourish you.
Ask yourself what is it that you need right now
What is it that you need in this moment? We all go through our day without actually checking in on our energy levels and just plough on regardless. It’s so important to be able to listen to your body, a learned skill that can take some time to attune, and then honour those body’s needs.
Pause for a moment and ask yourself this simple question and honestly, it’s enlightening. Perhaps you need to be soft and gentle with yourself or maybe you need to feel more motivated to carry out the task at hand. Whatever the thing is that you need, lean into that and appreciate the rewards it brings.

Check in with how you’re feeling
Again, creating the space to reflect on how we’re feeling isn’t something that we do enough. If you have a journalling practice this is a great opportunity to do this. Also, it can be a good practice to ask yourself how you’re feeling at different points in the day.
Being conscious of what’s bringing you joy and keeping you lifted and leaning into more of that can help to protect your mental space and general wellbeing.

Get stuck into something constructive
Whenever we’re in overthinking mode or procrastinating over something, the best way to get through this is by taking action and doing something constructive. It instantly diverts your thoughts onto something more positive, which is a much better way to use your time energy to move you forward.

Get clear on your boundaries
Unhealthy boundaries are such a big area that my clients struggle with all the time. Getting clear on what you’re available for and no longer available for is a brilliant way to reinforce how you really want to spend your time and energy and discover alignment.
Write a definitive list and work out what your emotional and physical boundaries are and try your best to stick to them, even if it means that you feel uncomfortable at times. This is really helpful if you’re feeling overwhelmed because you’ve been doing all the things for all the people.

Take a step back
When we’re going about our day and getting stuff done, especially in busy periods, it can be important to take a step back and re-evaluate the direction we’re going in. Most of the time, slowing down can be seen as a negative thing, when in actual fact it’s the complete opposite.
When you slow down and notice your feelings, energy levels, and needs, you become more productive because you’re doing right by your body and giving it what it needs to see you through. Taking a break is actually a good thing because you come back feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and energised.
